Vietnam

I spent two weeks traveling through Hanoi, Huế, and Da Nang to explore how cannabis is understood in Vietnam beyond the letter of the law. Rather than being debated as medicine or recreation, cannabis is grouped with other illicit drugs and framed as a social threat, shaping stigma, enforcement, and everyday behavior. Drawing on street encounters, local conversations, media narratives, and historical context, this video examines how cannabis remains hidden, informal, and risky, carrying meanings very different from places like the United States or Thailand. Part of an ongoing series, this episode uses Vietnam to show how the same plant can reflect broader differences in culture, politics, and national identity across countries.
